THE RIGHT COLOUR SHADES FOR YOUR BEDROOM

Choosing paint colours for your bedroom can seem overwhelming but fun. The colours you love to wear, to have around you, reflect your personality and tastes. When choosing paint colours for your bedroom, the number of choices can seem awesome. There are no hard-and-fast rules, but it's good to keep some guidelines in mind.

Today's bedroom size are typically larger than the other rooms in our homes, which gives us many options to combine layer colours to create a unique look. If your bedroom includes a bathroom and a dressing or sitting area, plan your colours for all of those spaces as a whole. That doesn't mean the paint colours in your bedroom and bathroom needs to match, but they should complement one another. Picking up accent colours in one room and incorporating those colours into the other will create a unified look that will turn your bedroom into the comforting personal retreat you desire.

Below are some guidelines to help you choose those perfect colours for your bedroom from Interior remodel:

1. Think about the rooms you spend time in, and how they make you feel. Do you prefer a room that is light and airy, or dark and cosy? Do you prefer solid shades on your walls, or paint with some type of design? Stripes, stencil patterns, sponge painting and textures can add a touch of style to any bedroom. Consider your decorating style. Smaller patterns lend themselves to a more traditional look, while larger patterns and geometric shapes, bold stripes and curves are more compatible with a contemporary look.

2. Consider what mood you want to set in your bedroom. Most homeowners want this space to be a peaceful retreat, with soothing colours. But that doesn't mean that bright or dark colours have no place. You can use neutral shades to create a look that leaves room for pops of colour in your bed linens, pillows, lamps and other fittings. A neutral shade also works well because you can change out your accessories to suit your mood or to decorate for the season.

3. Love green? Green is one of the best colours for bedrooms, because it has elements of both warm and cool, and there is a wide range of tints from which to choose. With green, you can furnish your room in a modern, traditional or eclectic style. It looks great with pops of complementary colours and furniture that is either painted or bare wood. Soft green hues can also create a calming effect.

4. If red is your favorite colour, you can use it in the bedroom, but use caution. Red stimulates, and too much of it can be overwhelming. Choose a muted tint, or try using red on just one wall, either behind your headboard or on a wall that has large windows, to break up the intense color. Be careful about using bare wood furniture in a room with pure red walls, as the two can clash. Better to go with painted pieces.

Bright reds and oranges may not be the best colours for adults seeking a space to unwind in the evenings, but bright colours can work well in children's rooms. The tips for red also hold true for yellow. Softer shades will be more relaxing, and you don't want to go with too bright a shade in the bedroom.

5. If a bright shade is your child's favorite, go for it. The same goes for purple; a favorite of teen and tween girls, purple stimulates brain activity and is a good choice if your child studies in her room. A kid's bedroom is a great place to stray from traditional colours, so let your child use his or her creativity to create their perfect space.

6. For a tranquil, spa-like space, soft neutrals with touches of warm browns and cool, soothing blues are good choices. Cool and soothing blues are natural for the bedroom. In traditional bedrooms, deeper shades of blue create a stately backdrop for antiques and classic furnishings, as well as artwork. There are plenty of muted and pale tones of blue that create a soft look for those who don't want a dark colour on their walls.

7. White can also create a soothing atmosphere; pair it with soft shades and neutrals or, for a contemporary looks that pops, bright or black accents. Lighter shades and pastels can also help a small room feel larger and more airy, and touches of a bright shade will turn your bedroom into a cheery space.

8. Even black can work in your bedroom, but be sure to balance it with white furnishings, and add colour with bright touches such as yellow or turquoise. Whether you're choosing paint for your bedroom or a family member's room, consider the occupant's age. For a room in which adults will sleep, neutral shades are popular, but don't be afraid of colour.

Colours are brighter when the mind is open so if you want more color on your bedroom walls, let your passions guide you.
